Samsung Galaxy Note USB tethering

Samsung Galaxy Note is a Hybrid of a smartphone and a Tablet. It runs on Android Gingerbread OS. This smartphone is tethering enabled. Hence you can use Samsung Galaxy Note as WiFi Hotspot  or for USB tethering. Advantage of using Galaxy Note USB tethering is that, it will reduce battery consumption compared to WiFi. Below are the steps to enable USB/Wireless tethering of Samsung Galaxy Note.

USB tethering of Samsung Galaxy Note

Below are the steps to follow to enable USB tethering on Galaxy note if you are running on Windows 7 or latest versions of Linux such as Ubuntu Linux. However for other OSes PC needs to prepared to accept connection.

  1. Connect your Galaxy Note to PC or laptop using the USB cable provided with the phone.
  2. Go to Settings of your smartphone
  3. Select “Wireless and Network Option”
  4. Choose “Tethering and portable Hotspot”
  5. Check “USB tethering”  to share your phone internet connection with PC or Laptop.
  6. You are done. There will be notification in your system on internet connection
  7. To disable USB tethering of Samsung Galaxy Note, Uncheck “USB tethering” option

As mentioned above, the procedure works well with Windows 7. However if you are using Windows XP, then you need to configure your computer to enable Galaxy Note tethering.
USB Tethering of Samsung Galaxy Note on Windows XP:

  • Download the configuration file “tetherxp.inf to your computer. You can download this by visiting Android Driver page
  • Follow step mentioned above from  1 to 4.
  • Once you enable USB tethering on your Galaxy Note, Windows will open up “New Hardware Wizard”.Select “NO.Not at this time” and click “next” on your computer
  • Choose “Install from a list or specific location” and click “Next”
  • Windows uses itself the configuration file which you have downloaded to support USB tethering  with the Samsung Galaxy Note.
  • Once Windows finishes installing the drivers for Android USB Ethernet/RNDIS, click finish
  • Now you can use the new Windows Local area network connection provided by Samsung Galaxy Note via USB tethering.
