    Honor 8X Pros

First, let us start with the features which are good.

     Design

Honor 8X sports dual tone gradient aurora glass in the back which provides a stylish look to this device.  Design wise it is one of the best-looking smartphone in the mid-range smartphones we have seen.

    Display

6.5-inch full HD+ display with an aspect ratio of 19:5:9 on Honor 8X impressive. It has a small notch and thin chin at the bottom. There is an option to hide the notch and change the color temperature. Overall the display provides good viewing angle and color saturation.

    Performance

Honor 8X comes with HiSilicon Kirin 710 SoC with 4GB/6GB RAM variant. We have tested the 4GB variant. We didn’t face any lag or shuttering while multitasking or running regular apps like Instagram, WhatsApp or playing videos. The graphic demanding games like Asphalt 9 ran smoothly without any frame drop.

    Camera

Dual camera setup which consists of a 20MP primary sensor with f/1.8 and a 2 MP secondary sensor with AI support takes good photos in well-lit conditions.  Photos had plenty of details and colors are vibrant.  The AI support can recognize more than 500 different scenario and around 22 categories. Front facing camera performance in well-lit condition is good.

    Battery

Real life battery performance of Honor 8X is incredible for the price and features this phone has. In spite of using 4G LTE all the time with a lot of youtube video streaming and few games phone easily lasted more than a day.

    Honor 8X Cons

Here are the few demerits of Honor 8X.

Average camera performance in low light

The camera struggles in low light situations. The taken photographs lack details. AI is also not helpful. It just oversaturated bright colors.

    Slow charging

The bundled charger takes more than 2 hours to fully charge from zero. It would have been great if this had a fast charging capability.

A bit bulky for small hands

Though having a large screen phone has a lot of advantages, it also difficult to handle in one hand especially if you have small hands. It feels bulky and difficult to handle.

    Outdated micro USB port

It would have nice if this device had a new generation USB-C port.

  • Honor Play Review with Pros and Cons

Honor Play is a midrange smartphone with a special focus on gaming. It has Huawei’s flagship HiSilicon Kirin 970 chipset, notched display, dual camera setup and the bunch of other useful features. In this Honor Play review, let’s try to find out the strengths and weakness of this device.

    Honor Play Review

Honor Play Review with Pros and Cons

    Honor Play Pros

    Design and build quality

Honor Play comes with a metal unibody design. With minimal bezels in the sides of the screen, a tall and thin display panel makes it compact and feels sturdy.

    Display Panel

The device comes with 6.3-inch full-HD+ IPS LCD panel has a resolution of 1080×2340 pixels and a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. The quality of the panel used is impressive. It delivers good color reproduction and has great viewing angles. Brightness is also decent.

    Performance

Huawei’s flagship HiSilicon Kirin 970 chipset with 6GB of RAM and GPU Turbo option technology delivers the great real-world experience. Whether it is a multitasking or heavy games, the device does not disappoint. Honor Play comes with a new antenna design to improve call quality. Signal reception and cellular call quality are best in the segment.

    Battery Life

Honor Play comes with 3750 mAh battery with Huawei’s fast charger. Battery life decent and manages to complete the full day with medium to heavy usage.

    Software and Fingerprint scanner

Huawei’s custom skin EMUI 8.2 on top Android 8.1 Oreo does provide the good user experience. It packs useful functions such as one-handed mode, navigation gestures, a Themes catalog, Wi-Fi+ etc. The face recognition was fast and accurate. Sound output via 3.5mm headphone jack is crisp and loud.

    Honor Play Cons

Here is the list of Honor Play cons which we felt could have been better.

    Camera

At the rear, Honor Play sports vertically aligned dual camera setup. First one is 16-megapixel primary camera with a f/2.2 aperture. Another one is the 2-megapixel depth sensor with a f/2.4 aperture. This is assisted with dual LED flash. There is a 16MP front-facing camera.

The rear camera does take good images in most of the situation. However, at times it fails. The hit or miss performance is a bit of concern considering high standard set by recent  Honor smartphones. Video recording and front facing camera performance are decent and at par with the competition.

    Relatively bigger size

It is subjective. Because of the large 6.3-inch display screen, in spite of narrow bezels, the device feels a bit uncomfortable in hand.

    Weekly Sale model

Currently, Honor Play is selling through amazon.in. The sale happens once in a week at a specified time. A limited number of the device will be available. So it is difficult to buy one for yourself unless you are very quick in ordering.

  • Honor 7X Cons- 5 reasons not to Buy

We have written a post on which we have mentioned about all the Honor 7X pros. Even now we feel it is one of the best value for money device. Having said that, there is nothing called a perfect phone. Each phone will have some or other cons. So here is the Honor 7X Cons according to us.

Honor 7X Cons- 5 reasons not to Buy

These are may not be a deal breaker for many. But it is good to know before picking the one for your self.

    1. No USB-C port: Honor 7x comes micro USB slot for the charging and data transfer.  Considering the features it packs, lack of latest USB-C type port is little disappointment.
    2.  No Optical image stabilization: Camera is one of the key strength of the Honor 7X. However, lack of OIS is felt while recording videos and clicking images in low light condition.
    3.  Lack of fast charging:  Honor 7x packs 3340 mAh battery and comes with 10W charger in the box. In our review time, charging the device to 100% from 0% took close to two and half hours. The inclusion of fast charging option could have been better according to us.
    4.  No Android Oreo out of the box:  Running on the latest Android version is what many users wish for.   Though Honor promised for Oreo update to Honor 7X, users have to wait for it. The EMUI 5.1 on top of Android Nougat does the fantastic job. There is no doubt about it. But Android Oreo out of the box is something which we miss on this device.
    5. No dedicated microSD card slot: Honor 7X comes with hybrid sim card slot. This means you can either use 2 sim cards or 1 sim card with the microSD card. 64GB internal storage on a higher variant is sufficient for most of the user. But if you have chosen 32GB variant and using 2 sim cards, then you might feel the absence of dedicated microSD card slot.

    Gorgeous Display

Honor 7x sports 5.93inch full HD+(1080*2160) IPS display screen with 18:9 aspect ratio. Though it has a large screen, the device feels compact. Thanks to the thin bezel around the screen. Viewing angle, color saturation, brightness and touch response is good.  For media consumption, it is one of the best budget smartphone according to us.

    Camera

Honor 7x comes with dual camera setup in the back which comprise of 16MP primary and 2MP depth sensor. It has  8MP front-facing camera for selfies. There are plenty of modes to play with camera settings. The pro mode allows you to manually change ISO, shutter speed, exposure etc. You can see some of the sample images taken using Honor 7x in our Instagram page here.

    Software

This new midrange smartphone from Honor runs on EMUI 5.1 which is based on Android 7.0 Nougat. There is useful customization options such as themes, dual apps, WiFi bridge option to name few. The company also claims that with EMUI 5.1 smartphone will not become slow with the time.

    Performance and Battery life

Honor 7x is powered by HiSilicon Kirin 659 octa-core SoC with four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 2.36GHz and 4 Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.7GHz, coupled with 4GB of RAM. In our usage, we have not faced any UI lag or difficulty in playing any games. Coming to the battery, it has 3340 mAh battery. In our regular usage, it easily lasts more than a day of usage.

    Value for money

There are very few smartphones in the price bracket of sub 15k which has close to a 6-inch display with the thin bezel. We are not saying it is a perfect phone.  It has few cons which we will cover in our next post. But considering the price, it offers a lot to users.
