  • Motorola Moto E 2nd Gen Cons and Pros Review

    Last year Motorola Moto E has changed the low end smartphone market in India. Decent screen, good battery life and sufficiently powerful processor with latest Android OS for a budget price attracted masses.  Motorola Moto E 2nd generation is here with few more upgrades over its predecessor. With the launch of Lenovo A6000 and Xiaomi Redme 2, there is a tough competition for the new Moto E.  We will have quick glance on what actually new Moto E brings in.

    Motorola Moto E 2nd Gen comes with 4.5 inch display screen with qHD resolution of 540x960p. Though there is a slight increase in the screen size, the resolution remained unchanged. However, the display panel quality very good considering the price. Colour reproduction of the screen and sunlight legibility are decent.  The screen has Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection.

    2nd Gen Moto E

    Motorola Moto E 2nd Gen is powered by 1.2GHz quad core Snapdragon 200 processor with 1GB of RAM and Adreno 302 GPU. The device supports 2 sims and runs on Android 5.0.2 Lollipop. The internal storage of the device is 8GB and supports microSD card upto 32GB.

    Motorola Moto E 2nd Gen sports 5MP primary camera with LED flash. There is also VGA front facing camera. Now camera has touch to focus feature. But primary camera quality on photos as well as videos are just average. The front facing camera performance also below average. The connectivity features of the device includes 2G, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and microUSB 2.0.  It has 2390 mAh battery.

    Moto 2nd Gen, Lenovo A6000 and Xiaomi Redme 2 all comes with same price tag. Choosing the best is based on the individual choices. Except camera and connectivity features, Moto E 2nd Gen is better option. I will do a detailed comparison on my next post.

    Cons of 2nd Gen Moto E

    • Poor camera performance: In spite of improvements in camera section, camera performance of both primary and secondary are bad.
    • No 720p HD screen: There are smartphones such as Lenovo A6000 and Xiaomi Redme 2 which are priced similarly offer 720p HD screen.
    • 1080p video playback stutters.
    • Non removable battery.

    Samsung Galaxy A3 is the most affordable smartphone of the premium uni-body designed A series of Samsung. It is available in single sim variant and Dual sim variants.The other two smartphones with this premium design are Galaxy A5 and Galaxy A7. The Samsung Galaxy A3 price in India is Rs.20,500.

    Samsung Galaxy A3 is powered by 1.2GHz Quad Core snapdragon 410 chipset(64 bit ARM Cortex A53) with 1GB of RAM and Adreno 306 GPU. It has 16GB of internal storage and supports microSD card for external storage. However, you will not be able to use microSD card and second sim simultaneously.

    Samsung Galaxy A3 sports 4.5 inch Super AMOLED screen with resolution of 540×960 pixels and 245 ppi pixel density. The screen to body ratio is around 65.5%. The screen has Corning Gorilla Glass protection to prevent the scratched to the display screen. The connectivity features of the device are 2G,3G, Bluetooth, WiFi, USB, WiFi Hotspot and USB tethering.

    Samsung Galaxy A3 houses 8MP primary camera with LED flash and 5MP front facing camera. It has 1900 mAh battery which lasts for more than a day on casual usage. The Galaxy A3 runs on Android 4.4 Kitka with Touchwiz UI. Overall in simple, A3 is the trimmed version of the Samsung Galaxy A5.

    Pros of Galaxy A3

    • Premium Build Quality: The full metal body with unibody design gives a premium feel. It is light weight and feels great in hand.
    • Good performance: The performance of the Galaxy A3 is good. There is very minimal or no lag while using the device. The high end games such as Modern Combat and Asphalt 5 runs without any issues.
    • Decent Display: The Super AMOLED screen provides good viewing angles and sunlight legibility also good.
    • Low SAR Value: It is one of the smartphone with very low SAR value.
    • Good front facing camera: Galaxy A3 front facing camera does pretty good job.
    • Battery and Call quality: The battery life is decent and the call quality also good.

    Cons of Galaxy A3

    • Second sim and microSD card cannot be used simultaneously
    • No LED notification
    • No USB OTG support
    • Low light or artifical light camera performance is average
    • NO 4G support
    • Over priced: There are many other devices with same chipset available for much lower prices.
    • No Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box.

  • Xiaomi MiPad With Tegra K1 SOC and 7.9 inch Display

    Xiaomi on its event on 12th March, launched two devices in India. The first one is Redme 2 and the other one is table which is named as MiPad.  It was first unveiled in China last year May month. Xiaomi first table in India is available exclusively on Flipkart. Unlike other Xiaomi devices, this will be available without flash sales. Xiaomi MiPad price in India is Rs.12,999.

    Xiaomi MiPad  sports 7.9-inch IPS Retina display with screen resolution of QXGA (2048×1536 pixel)  and a pixel density of 324ppi, all of which is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3 screen. This tablet runs on Android 4.4 Kitkat along with MiUI.

    Xiaomi MiPad is powered by ‘4+1’-core Nvidia Tegra K1 SoC ARM Cortex-A15 processor clocked at 2.2GHz with the 192-core Kepler GPU, alongside 2GB of LPDDR3 RAM. This tablets claims to pack Kepler GPU architecture and supports OpenGL 4.4 and OpenGL ES 3.1. Connectivity features of the tablet includes dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth 4.0.  The MiPad tablet houses 6700mAh Li-ion battery. The internal storage of this tablet is 16GB.

    Xiaomi MiPad houses a  8-megapixel rear camera with a Sony BSI sensor that can shoot full-HD resolution videos. There is also a 5MP front facing camera with OmniVision sensor. Both camera do feature  f2.0 aperture. MiPad measures 135.4×202.1×8.5mm and weighs 360 grams.

    Considering at the specification, this Xiaomi tablet looks of the best value for money tablet. However, real time performance will be known once we get the device for review. Only thing which strikes as of now is lack of Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box.

    Xiaomi Redme 2 is the successor to  popular budget dual sim Android smartphone Redme 1s. The device is priced at Rs. 6999 and will be available exclusively on Flipart. Like Redme 1S, this also available through flash sales.  The registration starts from today and sale starts on March 24. The limited edition Redme 2 with 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage will be launched in India on later date.

    Xiaomi Redme 2 has many features same as its predecessor and some upgrades. It is powered by 64bit 1.2GHz quad core Snapdragon 410 processor with 1GB of RAM. The device has 8GB of internal storage and supports microSD card  for additional storage. It runs on Android 4.4 Kitkat with MIUI 6 UI. Redme 2 is dual sim 4G and both sim supports 4G.

    Xiaomi Redme 2 houses 8MP primary camera with LED flash and 2Mp front facing camera. The connectivity features of the device includes 2G, 3G, 4G, Bluetooth and GPS. The device also supports USB OTG. Xiaomi Redme 2 will be available in pink, yellow, green, grey and white colors. This device will compete with other budget 4G smartphones in India such as Lenovo A6000,  Yu Yureka and Moto E 4G edition.

    Xiaomi Mi4 is the last year flagship model of the company. Almost a year later it is available for Indian customers. The previous models Xiaomi Mi3, Redme 1s got huge success. However, Redme Note not received the same response like the other. When Xiaomi launched Mi3 or Redme 1s, it was something great offering for that price. Now Xiaomi Mi4 has many competitors such as with same price tag and specification. We will see how is the performance of this device.

    Xiaomi Mi4 is powered by 2.5GHz Quad core Snapdragon 801 CPU with Adreno 330 GPU and 3GB of RAM. It comes with 16 or 64GB internal storage. Unfortunately there is no option to add additional storage through microSD card. Out of the box device runs on Android 4.4.4 Kitkat with MIUI 6 skin.

    Xiaomi Redme Mi4 sports 5 inch IPS  capacitive touch screen with screen resolution of 1080*1920 pixels which results in pixel density of 441. The screen has Corning One glass Solution for protection against scratches. Connectivity features of the device includes 2G, 3G, 4G, WiFi, Bluetooth and USB. 4G of this device is not compatible with Indian 4G networks.

    Xiaomi Mi4 houses 13MP front facing camera which can record upto 4K resolution videos and 8MP front facing camera.  It has 3000 mAh battery. It does supports Qualcomm fast charging and the stock charger supports this feature as well.

    Pros of Xiaomi Mi4

    • Brilliant display screen: The viewing angles and sunlight legibility is great.
    • Good camera performance:  Both primary 13MP and secondary 8MP camera performance is very impressive.
    • Excellent performance:  The performance of this device is excellent. The multitasking and gaming performance of Mi4 is exceptional and at par with other high end smartphones.
    • Great Battery Life: The battery life of Mi4 Coupled with fast charging feature, it  is much better than many other smartphone in the segment.
    • Great value for money

    Cons of Xiaomi Mi4

    • High SAR value: The SAR value of Xiaomi Mi4 is 1.360 W/Kg which is very high compared to other smartphones. If you are a health conscious, then you need to take this into consideration.
    • Color rendering of the screen is not accurate:  The colors in the display look vivid and great. However, colors doesn’t look natural even if we set Saturation level to Standard.
    • Indian 4G band is supported: Though it has 4G support, it is not compatible with Indian 4G bands.
    • No expandable storage: The device does support adding additional storage through microSD card.
    • No NFC: This is one features which was present in Mi3 and omitted in this model.
    • Average Speaker: The mono speaker of Mi4 does not provide loud output.
